How GAF Plant Communities Support Neighbors After Hurricanes

GAF plant communities are so much more than places to do business. They're communities where employees raise their families, support their neighbors, and call their home.

That's why, after Hurricane Helene tore through several plants—including Valdosta, Tampa, Savannah, and Statesboro—the local GAF team jumped into action to support those impacted by the storm. This spirit of service—even when many were grappling with damage themselves—embodied the GAF mission to protect what matters most.

Volunteering in Valdosta

The Valdosta plant is the newest of 30 GAF manufacturing facilities across the US. So while the plant had anticipated celebrating their opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony, Hurricane Helene swiftly impacted the plans, prompting the team to change gears and move into action.

What was meant to be a day of celebration quickly became a day of service. That morning, the GAF Valdosta team packed 1,200 food boxes for the Second Harvest of South Georgia Food Bank, equating to 39,600 meals for older adults and families in need. In the afternoon, the GAF volunteers packed 510 disaster pantry boxes, equating to 11,220 meals, for local distribution and to send to the Tallahasse area, also affected by Hurricane Helene.

"The most amazing part is how strong our team is," says Daniel Duston, Valdosta plant manager. "They were still recovering from the hurricane. Many did not have power for a week to two weeks; many are dealing with storm damage to their homes and property. Despite what they're facing at home, they still put on a smile and worked hard to support the community. It was wonderful to come together and help out so many on this special day for Valdosta."

Even more, the Valdosta plant team members packed 575 bags of food for the Hungry at Home program. These bags were given to local schoolchildren who rely on the program for after-school meals.
